Kids’ Free Day

Kids' Free Day

The third Saturday of every month is Kids’ Free Day at the CLC! At 10:15am, please join us for interactive activities, science demonstrations, and a FREE IMAX or Planetarium show for kids 12 and under (with a paying adult). These activities may include a Chemistry Magic Show presented by members of FSU Chemistry & Biochemistry, a presentation by the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering or CLC education team, and/or a presentation by a community partner.

The Challenger Learning Center’s monthly Kids’ Free Day is designed for the benefit of families in our community. Civic and school groups should contact our sales department at 850-645-7777 to arrange their visit to the Challenger Learning Center. Concessions and gift shop pre-orders are not accepted for the Kids’ Free Day event.

Free Planetarium Show – Monthly Skies over Tallahassee @ Planetarium Theatre

Free Planetarium Show - Monthly Skies over Tallahassee @ Planetarium Theatre

“Monthly Skies over Tallahassee” is created and presented by the Tallahassee Astronomical Society (TAS). The monthly sky over Tallahassee will be reviewed including prominent constellations, stars and planet positions. Audience interaction includes two holds for questions and a “sky test” of the evening sky.

Arrive early as there are only 128 planetarium seats. However, “Monthly Skies over Tallahassee” will be repeated at 11:00 a.m. for a reduced planetarium price of $3.00 for both children or adults and free for Challenger members.

“Monthly Skies over Tallahassee” is also included in the planetarium show schedule at the regular price including the first Wednesday of the month at 2:00 p.m.

3-4: Become an astronomer! Learn planet sizes using models of Earth, Mars and Earth’s moon, use the Challenger Rover app to explore Martian geology and more.
5-8: Travel around the Sun! Examine the sizes of Earth, Mars and Earth’s moon using models, use the Challenger Rover app to explore Mars, study concepts of gravity and escape velocity and more.

Seismology: Feeling the Earth Move Under Our Feet

This lecture features an introduction to seismology, including how seismic waves travel through the Earth, how waves are detected and recorded by seismographs and how recordings are used to locate earthquakes. Experience a seismic recording of a large earthquake and hands-on demonstrations of types of seismic waves and how seismometers work.

Dr. Bob Hutt is a retired United States Geological Survey scientist emeritus. Dr. Hutt’s research interests include seismometer testing and noise reduction, digital signal processing and detection among others. Dr. Hutt previously worked as a developmental geophysicist and as Scientist-in-Charge for 17 years at the Albuquerque Seismological Laboratory, a station operator for the seismograph and geomagnetic station at the South Pole in Antarctica and more.

Public Mission: Expedition Mars @ Space Mission Simulator

Recommended for grades 6 & up; under 4th grade requires a paid accompanying adult

Set in the future when humans have established mission control on the Martian Moon Phobos, spacecraft astronauts are on a mission to the surface of Mars to search evidence of life. They find themselves in a high-risk situation and must work together to complete the mission.
