SCITURDAYS

Every 2nd and 4th Saturday during the Fall and Spring is SCIturday at the Challenger Learning Center! Join us on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month this fall as we offer the next installment of the science series: SCIturdays.

Dates & Themes (Recommended for Ages 10 & Under and optional accompanying adult)

Saturday, September 9: Rocket to Space

Master principles of rocketry and space aviation! Build and experiment with different types of rockets using household items to see which flies the highest: straw rockets, alka seltzer rockets or water rockets.

Saturday, October 14: LEGO My Movie

Lights, camera, action! Use The LEGO Animation Book to bring your models to life with stop-motion animation, construct a storyline with LEGO StoryStarter software and create your own flip books.

Saturday, November 11: Kitchen Science Challenge

Discover new uses for what is in your kitchen cabinets! Explore changing states of matter using candy chromatography, experiment with food coloring and temperature, and make your own ice cream and “fruit caviar.”

Saturday, December 9: Let It Shine

How is electricity transformed into light? Learn the basics of electrical circuits using conductive play dough, create prototypes using littleBits and learn all about electricity by building with snap circuits.

Saturday, January 13: Under the Sea

Life is better under the sea! Make an underwater diorama featuring various sea creatures, a sea turtle bracelet, and learn all about underwater habitats. Receive $1 off the IMAX documentary Under the Sea 3D.

Saturday, February 10: Mars Explorers

Pair up with your little valentine for an adventurous space mission to Mars! Build an Atlas V paper rocket, construct a Magformer satellite and engage in hands-on experiments aboard our spacecraft simulator.

Saturday, March 10: Get Coding!

Coding is the new literacy! Use ScratchJr software to program your own interactive stories and games, design bracelets using binary code and explore sequencing, problem-solving and estimation by completing a maze with Bee-Bot robots.

Saturday, April 14: WeDo Nature

Become a robo-engineer! Use LEGO WeDo 2.0 kits, which combine LEGO bricks and kid-friendly software, to complete three lifelike constructions: a Venus Flytrap, Plants and Pollinators and Dancing Bees.

Saturday, May 12: Engineering Challenge

Dream Big! Sharpen your engineering skills and learn how to design a durable structure through trial & error challenges, build a large popsicle stick bridge and construct a tall tower out of straws.

Dates & Themes (Recommended for Ages 9 to 99)

Saturday, September 23: Blast-Off! Launch Day

“For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” Analyze Sir Isaac Newton’s three laws of motion and apply the findings to flight and rocketry by building and launching your own paper rockets.

Saturday, October 14: Movie Magic: Basics of Animation

Bring your imagination to life! Discover the art of filmmaking, from developing a storyboard to the rules of animation to creating your own animated short starring StikBot, the easy-to-pose, stop-motion figurine.

Saturday, November 25: Science Chef: Cooking with Chemistry

Whip up something delectable! Explore the concepts of molecular gastronomy, the relationship of molecules, flavor & pH level and the subtle art of cooking the perfect egg.

Saturday, December 23: Electricity & Circuits: Extreme Power

Harness the power of electricity! Engage in an interactive learning lab using sound and light snap circuits, including a sound energy demo, and use littleBits electronic building blocks to create your own inventions.

Saturday, January 27: Minecraft Mechanics: Coding & Redstone

Become a Minecraft master! Use coding and engineering principles to program & race a car and design & use a redstone practical machine, all in the collaborative design program, Minecraft.

Saturday, February 24: Kerbal Space Program: Mun or Bust!

Go on a mission of scientific discovery! Join the Kerbal Space Program in an attempt to reach the Mun, a large moon orbiting Kerbin, similar to Earth’s own moon and build a model of NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS).

Saturday, March 24: Coding & Arduinos: LED Madness

Spark up some fun! Build a blinking light LED (Light Emitting Diode) using Arduino microcontroller kits and identify and decipher hidden messages using your “de-coding” skills.

Saturday, April 28: Robots: Dance Dance Robo-lution

It’s time for a dance-off! Learn how to use the E-Z robots, which feature vision capabilities, speech recognition, animations & artificial intelligence, to follow an object and tell the difference between various objects. Concludes with a robot dance contest.

Saturday, May 26: Soar into Summer: Multiplayer Flight Simulation

Clear for departure! Design and learn the science behind wingless paper airplanes, study the basics of flying, and get behind the controls of your own flight simulator. *No flight experience necessary.
