'Run Silent, Run Deep: "New Life on WWII Shipwrecks in the Gulf of Mexico"'
a presentation by
Thomas Shirley, Ph.D., marine biologist, Texas A&M University
1942 was the high-water mark for Germany’s submarine warfare during World War II. That year alone, German U-boats operating in the Gulf of Mexico wreaked havoc on Allied shipping, sinking 56 vessels and killing and injuring scores of crewmen. Tom Shirley is one of 10 scientists who, in 2004, launched an investigation of eight little-studied, 1942 shipwrecks ranging in depth from 450 to 6,500 feet. The result is a fascinating new book on the project, along with a TV special. One of the wrecks is the U-166, the only German sub lost in the Gulf during the war. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see and hear what Shirley and his colleagues found using a variety of deepwater filming and sampling techniques.
Thursday, March 22 in the IMAX Theatre. Doors open at 6 p.m. Presentation will begin at 7 p.m.
This presentation is a production of The Tallahassee Scientific Society. For tickets and more information visit www.tallysci.org or call 850-877-0224.
