With media headlines repeatedly warning us of debris falling from the skies, orbital debris, or "space junk," has finally risen to the forefront of social consciousness. But what is space junk? How did it get there? Just how big (and serious) is the problem?

“The Ecology of Southern Nature” a presentation by
Janisse Ray, author, poet, naturalist
Only through the works of such Southern-born nature writers as Georgia’s Janisse Ray does the cause for preserving what’s left of the South’s profound natural legacy come into sharpest focus. Her first book, Ecology of a Cracker Childhood (2000), brought renewed attention to the plight of the longleaf pine, a tree that once dominated Southern woodlands and is all but gone from the landscape today. Ray’s passion and insight into the South’s natural heritage has produced four nonfiction books, along with a book of poetry. She still lives in her hometown of Baxley, Georgia and serves on the writing faculty of Chatham University in Pittsburgh.
Thursday, May 24 in the IMAX Theatre. Doors open at 6 p.m. Presentation will begin at 7 p.m.
This presentation is a production of The Tallahassee Scientific Society. For tickets and more information visit www.tallysci.org or call 850-877-0224. Tickets also available at the Challenger Learning Center box office, cash or check only.
