The Mission Continues: To Inspire…To Explore…To Learn!

January 28, 2006 marked the 20th anniversary of the Space Shuttle Challenger accident on which seven brave astronauts made the ultimate sacrifice. On that day, the Challenger 51-L “Teacher in Space” mission launched carrying Commander Dick Scobee, Pilot Mike Smith, Flight Engineer Judy Resnik, Mission Specialists El Onizuka, and Ron McNair, and Payload Specialist Greg Jarvis. This flight was to be the first Teacher in Space mission with high school teacher Christa McAuliffe to conduct classes from on board.

The families of the seven astronauts did not want those aboard to be remembered for their deaths but instead for the lives they led. To continue the mission of education and exploration, the families created a living memorial. Under the umbrella of their Challenger Center for Space Science Education established on April 24, 1986, a network of the world’s first interactive space science education centers has grown to include over 50 Challenger Learning Centers located throughout the world. These centers have one goal in mind, to foster interest in the fields of math, science, engineering, and technology. The mission continues!

To support education in these fields, we invite you to participate in the “Mission Continues” program by sponsoring a local class to particpate in the Challenger Learning Center program.
